Mexico City Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Shop, Stay, and Explore in CDMX
To put it plainly, our first trip to Mexico City completely exceeded our expectations in every way. Even though we only had a few days, we fell in love with the city’s incredible blend of art, architecture, food, and craftsmanship. Every corner felt inspiring, from colorful historic homes and world-class museums to local makers, vintage shops, and unforgettable restaurants.
Day 1: Frida, Art, and Meals Worth the Flight
We began our Mexico City itinerary the only way that felt right, at Casa Azul, the iconic Frida Kahlo Museum in the Coyoacán neighborhood. Standing inside her preserved studio, surrounded by her paints, her dresses, her world, it was one of those rare travel moments that genuinely moves you. We had tears in our eyes for much of the visit, to be able to see this in person is quite the experience. If you're visiting Mexico City for the first time, this is non-negotiable. Book tickets in advance, because they do often sell out.

That evening, we made our way to Máximo, a French-meets-Mexican bistro that has quietly become one of the most celebrated restaurants in the city. The menu is seasonal, the ingredients are impeccably sourced, and the whole experience feels like a love letter to what CDMX dining does best.

Day 2: Architecture, Shopping & The Best Tostadas
Day two was our fullest, and our favorite! Our morning began with pastries from Panadería Rosetta before visiting Casa Gilardi, one of the most beautiful architectural landmarks in Mexico City. Luis Barragán’s bold use of color, light, and minimalist design made this one of the highlights of our trip.

We spent the afternoon exploring the charming streets around Avenida Amsterdam in Colonia Condesa, a neighborhood made for slow, aimless exploration. Small boutiques, local designers, vintage clothing shops tucked into beautiful old buildings. This is the kind of shopping we love, that actually feeds the soul.
For a quick and perfect small bite, we stopped at Tacos Hola El Güero, a beloved neighborhood institution serving traditional guisados since 1968. Later, the moment we'd been waiting for, lunch at Entremar. The show stealing tuna tostadas, just wow! The grilled branzino, the light, the people, everything lived up to the hype, and then some.

That evening, we explored Roma Norte, a walkable and picturesque neighborhood that was perfect to take in, as a first time visitor. We ended the night at Handshake Speakeasy; one of the best cocktail bars in the world and followed by dinner and drinks at Nuevo Bar.
Day 3: Galleries & Design
Our final full day was spent exploring some of Mexico City’s most creative spaces. This took us to Galería OMR and Casa Lamm, two of the most compelling spaces in the city.

We enjoyed our last evening and dinner at Rosetta, located in a stunning restored mansion in Roma Norte, serving some of the most beautiful, refined food in the city. It was the kind of farewell meal that makes you want to immediately rebook your flight.

Day 4: Shopping Local, a Memorable Farewell
We continued making visits to local brands and design studios like Korimi Mexico, Xinu Perfumes, Nin Studio, Perla Valtierra, Originario, and Utilitario Mexicano, reminding us why we love to shop local. After shopping, we ended up at Contramar, for a quick bite before we headed to the airport.
Where We Stayed: Casa Bosques, Roma Norte
If you’re looking for where to stay in Roma Norte, Casa Bosques is a true gem. This boutique hotel perfectly captures the creative spirit of Mexico City, with thoughtful design, beautiful interiors, and a calm atmosphere in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Don’t miss the Casa Bosques bookstore, a must-visit destination for lovers of art, design, architecture, and culture. We also love that we carry their incredible chocolates in our shop, making our visit feel even more special.
For a design-forward stay in CDMX, Casa Bosques is a place we’d happily return to without hesitation.
