A Family Vacation, Aloha Style!
After a busy and somewhat hectic last few months, it was time to slow down, relax and relish in the beauty of Oahu, Hawaii. This trip was a nice way for Melis’ boys to officially say goodbye to summer break, with school quickly approaching.
Most summers, are spent in Türkiye, but this year it was decided to spend it mostly enjoying home in Long Beach, with one relaxing getaway to paradise to finish out the season. Oahu has everything for a dream vacation; the beach, scenic hikes, exquisite food and the friendliest locals sharing in the Aloha spirit. The boys, Atlas and Aksel, are at great ages for being able to participate and enjoy all of the moments along this trip. Being together as a family in such a breathtakingly beautiful place, created lasting memories for the whole group.
What is a trip, without a little House No. 23?! Of course Melis had to bring along some favorite travel essentials. She lived in the Alaia Slip Dress, layered over swimsuits, shopped around town, and lounged at the resort. Melis swears by this dress, the best travel layer and so easy to throw on with anything! The Turkish Towels, are equally as incredible for vacationing. Lightweight, easy to pack, dries quickly and so versatile. One for each family member!
Oahu is a wonderful place to just take it easy, but still has plenty to offer for sightseeing, food and shopping. Here is Melis’ travelogue for Oahu, Hawaii:
Where to stay:
Four Seasons Resort Ko Olina has views of the ocean, a luxury pool and superb dining options. Michael Mina’s Fish House was a standout, as a traditional Hawaiian fish house that is all locally caught, plus beautiful open air oceanfront views.
There is a lovely secret lagoon, nearby the hotel, that the whole family had fun swimming and snorkeling. Breathtakingly beautiful and filled with colorful fish and friendly turtles.
Waimea Waterfall
This stunning sight has a long history of being associated with Hawaiian culture. Filled with lush tropical greenery and paths leading through the rainforest, it ends with a majestic view of the waterfall raining down on the peaceful water below. Along with the views are many cute snack bars, live music and the friendliest crew to take care of your belongings and provide any safety equipment needed.
North Shore
The day spent along the North Shore started with grabbing some fresh Açaí Bowls at The Sunrise Shack, a cool little food stand serving up delicious, all organic bowls and treats. After a refreshing morning bite, it was time to relax and do some sunbathing at Pupukea Beach. This tranquil spot is also great for kids, with plenty of snorkeling, diving and swimming. Lunch approached quickly and Turtle Bay Resort was just the spot. The whole family enjoyed watching all of the surfers while snacking, plus Melis and Volkan got to sip on a delicious Mai Tai at the Sunset Pool Bar.
Acai Bowls at The Sunrise Shack
Haleiwa
The cutest little town is just a drive away, with the absolute best shaved ice in all of Oahu, Matsumoto Shave Ice. It was just the refreshment needed before having some fun at Shark’s Cove with the best snorkeling and diving. The floor at this cove is filled with smooth boulders, coral heads that form small caves creating hiding places for the marine life.
The day wrapped up with dinner at Banzai Sushi. What an experience! The best locally grown organic produce and freshly caught raw fish, make for delicious and distinctively Hawaiian meal.
Kailua
If you ever get a chance to visit Oahu, make sure to schedule time to shop at Olive & Oliver. Founded by husband and wife team, Ali and Parker, this store is inspired by classical coastal lifestyle with a uniquely curated collection. Sure to find plenty of treasures here and many locally made goods to take back as memories or gifts.
Another must see at Kailua, Lanikai Beach, with it’s striking blue waters, the finest sand you’ll find in Hawaii and two beautiful offshore islands. This place truly felt like paradise!
Recommended by Ali and Parker, from Olive & Oliver was a great place for lunch, Buzz's Original Steakhouse. This Tiki-style hut has been serving up it's casual surf 'n' turf style menu since 1962. The food was delightful and the charming interior made for a great meal.
Waikiki
This day started with the best coffee from Arvo, a cute coffee shop with equally fun vibes. After some much needed caffeine it was time for a little shopping! If you are in Waikiki, Ron Herman is a must. Combining the vibrant Hawaiian culture with an effortlessly cool California vibe, you’ll find a great mix of iconic designers and emerging artists. You can’t leave Hawaii without an authentic Hawaiian shirt, next up, Kahala, founded in 1936 it is the oldest operating apparel company in Hawaii.
All that shopping will create a big appetite, especially for the kids. The next stop was for a snack at Rainbow Drive-In, a classic Hawaiian style lunch, with hearty portions. This spot is was founded in 1961 and is still family owned and operated. Rounding out the day called for some live entertainment followed by dinner, at House Without a Key, Halekulani. This iconic spot is nestled under a 130+ year old Kiawe Tree with views in the background of the ocean and Diamond Head. A dream place to catch the sunset with a cocktail in hand. The dining experience is just as incredible, with a fresh catch of the day, flavorful steaks and burgers. Dinner at House Without a Key was such a memorable stop to finish out the trip of a lifetime!
